President's Note – Ann Groce

Welcome to OSET 2011!     Just like our general economy, we are suffering a recession.   Below please find a list of pretty good suggestions for bringing our treasury back to a comfortable level.   December attendees came up with the list.   As you study it, please bring your ideas for improving augmenting, or implementing the list to our February meeting.   Volunteering to help out with, or even better, lead the effort on some of these projects would be great.

Meeting Notes: Dec 2010

We took a few moments at the Christmas Party to hold a meeting to discuss ways the club could raise money for speakers and trips.

A short meeting was held before the Christmas Party to discuss fundraising and attracting new members. Dee could not be present so Tammy Fletcher acted as secretary.

Fundraising and membership ideas:

  1. To save the club money, members could sign up for a month to bring the raffle just as we sign up now to bring refreshments. It could be anything excluding animals. - Trish
  2. Set up at Evergreen Garden Center to sell plants, advertise the club .LLE to talk with Evergreen to see if they would allow it. – John H and Bob Kurtz. David Heaton suggested we try to have a fall and spring public Orchid Sale as a fund raiser.
  3. The successful Bristol Show was discussed and it was debated whether we should have another show. John H recommended selecting a site with high traffic, and we need to advertise and get publicity for the show to make it successful. Bill mentioned that the malls were reluctant to let us set up as we do not carry insurance.
  4. An orchid yard sale during the big annual Yard Sale on the Tree Streets in JC was suggested. John H will check with his daughter who lives in that area as to the feasibility of that
  5. Upcoming events publicity will be handled by Trish Jenkins.
  6. Gilda suggested advertising orchid sale as an orchid plant yard sale to take advantage of free advertising, which has been cost prohibitive in the past.
  7. We could have to Orchid Auctions a year.
  8. To save money we could drop the monthly raffles.

Meeting was adjourned. Members ate and then held drawing. Excess plants were auctioned off.
