OSET March 2011 Newsletter

Dividing/Repotting Catts, Phals, and Paphs

March 6th 2pm

President's Note – Ann Groce

OSET members did a great job with our presentation at the Johnson City Home and Garden show this past month.   The display plants loaned by, the time and effort donated by club members combined to generate a lot of interest from visitors and an invitation to return to the show next year.

The most important result of the weekend's effort is new members. We have 6 new members!   Please keep an eye out for new faces at our next meeting and make them welcome.   Newcomers may not remember what the speaker says, but they will always remember how we made them feel.

There are a number of upcoming events.   Please share your plants and your time with us for the Garden Fair and Orchid Shows coming up. See the Events section of the newsletter for more information.

OSET will be having a yard sale! Tammy Fletcher and Trish Jenkins have agreed to gather up our unwanted items and sell them May 14th at the Big Jonesborough Yard Sale. Proceeds will benefit our club. So bring unwanted items (priced please) to the March, April or May meeting. Tammy Fletcher will store them in her garage until the time of the sale. Please understand that any unsold items will be donated to charity. Good items are books, sewing stuff, oh wait that is what Tammy likes to buy at yard sales! Point is, any donations will be appreciated, and it doesn't have to be anything orchid related. (Newsletter Editor wrote this bit about the yard sale.)

It was announced that OSET would participate in the Johnson City Home and Garden Show. We would obtain plants and sell them both days and would make a presentation on orchard culture each day to the attendees. (Bob Kurtz and John Hyatt made the presentations).

We discussed the Knoxville show and the WNC Orchard Society show in Asheville on March 25 and OSET will participate. We need volunteers to do the "take down" on Sunday after the show. It was discussed that we consider attending the Garden Fair Show at the Exchange Place Saturday only April 30. Our meeting on May 1st will be a field trip to Bay's Mountain. We will meet at the Gray Community Center and carpool to Bay's Mountain. The Jonesborough Memorial Day weekend is still in the planning stages.

The door prize was won by Brickie Heaton and the raffle was won by Trish and Bonnie Armstrong.

Show and Tell- Linda Lee, Gilda and John Hyatt.

Our program was Geraldine Powell from the Orchid Gallery in Chattanooga.

We adjourned at 3:50 PM.
