OSET April 2011 Newsletter

April  3 at 2 pm Linda Thorne of Seagrove Orchids http://seagroveorchids.com/   Look at the website and pre order plants, Linda will be happy to bring your purchases to the meeting to save on shipping.

Please note that it is club policy that members do not bring plants to sell when a speaker will have plants for purchase. If you have made sales outside of the meeting and need to deliver the plant at the meeting that is fine to do.

President's Note – Ann Groce

OSET is in need of a volunteer to miss the May meeting.    We are looking for one or two friendly people to man our "booth" at Exchange Place on Sunday with Gilda while the rest of us tramp through the woods at Bays Mountain.    It is an opportunity to sell orchids and to sell our society to the rest of the fine folks who haven't discovered us yet.    You will also get the chance to show Exchange Place visitors how expert you are in growing orchids!    As one of my professors used to tell me, an "expert" is the guy who knows just one iota more than the next fellow, so we're all good candidates for the Exchange Place job!

In my spare time, I've been cleaning out drawers and closets that haven't been touched in years in preparation for the Club yard sale at Jonesborough, and the best part of it all is that we have already got our volunteers lined up for that.   Tammy Fletcher, Linda Lee Earl and Trish Jenkins will be hawking our goods for us, so grab a box and bring it full of your unwanted items to the next meeting.

.Many thanks to the Heatons and the Hyatts for setting up and taking down our display table at the Smoky Mountain Orchid Show in March! Linda Lee Earle had a Masdevalia awarded at the show.

Vice President's Note - Linda Lee Earl 2011 Meeting Schedule.

Trish Jenkins helped me set up at the show and we had a really good time.  Bob Kurtz , Uta and I carpooled in Uta's car to the show on Saturday David and Sandy Heaton came down on their own and joined us at the show.  It was a lovely show and kuddos to all who displayed plants because all three of us won ribbons! I won Best in Class first bloom seedling and an AM/AOS on my little yellow Paph.

Gilda won the door prize

It was announced that we had a few Phals left over from the Home and Garden Show that will be auctioned off. It was decided that we will order our plants further in advance of the Home Show next year so we will have a greater variety. We gained 6 new members from the Home Show. We made $12.00 at the show.

We declined the invitation from the Women's Expo because it was the same weekend as the Asheville Show where we will have a display. We will participate in the Exchange Place in Kingsport on Saturday and Sunday (4/30 & 5/1). We need a volunteer to stay at the exhibit on Sunday because that is the same day as our Bay's Mountain meeting. It was decided that members could be at the Exchange Place in time to do the take down.

Linda Thorne will be our speaker at the April 3rd meeting and will have plants to sell. Her subject will be Catts.

The Jonesborough City Wide Yard Sale will be held in downtown on 5/14 from 9 AM to 3 PM. This is an opportunity to clean out your basement and garage to benefit the club treasury. Bring donations to the meetings as Tammy has volunteered to store them until the sale. Any left over items will be donated to charity.

The Jonesborough Garden Gala will be held on 5/28. We need plants for display and we will purchase plants to sell. We will be located inside the Storytelling building.

We will poll the membership as to including e-mail addresses on the club roster.
